If I hit the orb on the right, I don't see how to avoid the snake getting me on its next circuit but can't see how to get at the other one. Must be missing something...

disclaimer: I haven't played this room, but perhaps you should question your first ideas. To wit:
when you hit the orb on the right, the snake will kill you, right? What if you weren't there? What would happen to the snake?

now, what is preventing you from not being there? and what would happen to the snake if that wasn't preventing you from escaping?
