We require an e-mail address to be entered. I think that's okay, because its a simple way to make sure some other features work, but it seems rude to open up the user to receiving e-mail if he doesn't want it.
Also, I personally don't like to receive PMs because then I have two inboxes to look at.
To solve both problems, I propose adding profile options to enable/disable receiving messages from other users by 1. e-mail and 2. personal messages. I think the best defaults are e-mail disabled and PMs enabled. Personally, in my profile I would probably enable e-mails and disable PMs.
The two options affect which icons are displayed with a user's post to contact him--one, both, or neither. The e-mail enablement wouldn't affect the other features that send e-mail to you automatically when posts are made to the forum.
Does that make sense?
