I honsetly have a hard time wrapping my brain around snake timing puzzles, so I don't quite get the terminology sometimes. That said,

I recommend doing a search in the drod forum on monster movement and read about serpent movement. Serpents have either a preference to move horizontally or vertically depending on the spawn timer (alternating in groups of five). You can also install a serpent clock to make this much easier.

You can make the switch by


Simple snake knowledge: hit enter while playing and look at the move count.

If the number ends in 9-3, snakes have horizontal preference.
If the number ends in 4-8, snakes have vertical preference.

(Also you may not need to switch but it depends on the move order)

Thanks. But looking at that, it seems I don't have to make the switch, I just have to do a better job of manuevering the snake around.

I've been on this room for days and days and days. I've read treatises on snake movement till my brain hurts. I still can't do it.

So I resorted to downloading the demo. Rats! it doesn't work for me. Made in a more recent version than I have.

I have JtRH 2.0.15.1, and I can't find a later version for Mac. Or do I have to get TCB and play it in that? I'm confused about the different DROD versions and what can play in each.

I just want to get past this room.

I think you should get TCB. You can do it here.

Besides, you'll be able to play most of newest holds with TCB.

I've downloaded TCB. As far as I can see, I will have to restart this hold from scratch. Is there a way to import my progress so far? I can't find any relevant file.

Still, TCB looks really good. It quite distracted me from the current problem. Thanks, mxvladi.

I think there were some changes in 2.0.16 that fixed exactly that type of problem (DROD running out of memory while exporting - under Windows XP at least, but I don't think that problem is OS-specific), so perhaps Mike could cook up a patch/install of 2.0.16 for the Mac - not being able to export your player file is pretty bad, after all.

Also, you could try increasing the size of your page-/swap-file to at least 3GB to make sure DROD can use as much memory as possible, which might be just what you're missing for the export to succeed...

Anyway, as far as this room is concerned, I've dug up my old install of JtRH so I'll just attach my victory demo (made with 2.0.16, which should work in 2.0.15.1 just the same) here...
