I am coming up so short in this room that I'm sure I must be doing something wrong. It all seems very obvious, except that I don't seem to be able to make it work.

I'm looking for a few pointers for efficiency myself. At best I'm ten moves shy, which seems a tad bit too much... I guess my problem is figuring out when I should stop cutting tar and instead use the path I've already made.

Narrow paths through the tar are bad. I suggest trying to carve out a single larger area that you can move left and right through without turning your sword too much. Be willing to back up, if necessary, to get back to your main clearing.
