...so why don't clicking doors show you which orbs they're connected to?

Mm, I think this has been suggested before - I wouldn't be surprised if it was already in TCB 3.0 (though its not one of the confirmed features). It must be easy to do, since it should already be basically in the Halph code for finding the nearest orb.
