Huh, I didn't even know it was there...anyway, I just went to it and beat it on the first try (probably by luck), so it is possible. Here's what I did:

×Lured the snake to come at me from the East, while standing on the square right in front of the two passageways. When it was right next to me, I stepped South, then East. It went up into the Northern passageway and died a horrible death there.
