I'm not sure about the hype on the show, but I do find it quite enjoyable in its context. When I watched the first episode I was cringing at such things as simultaneous solar eclipses seen in New York, Texas and Tokyo, but I've since let go of my tenuous grip on reality and I feel much better.
It's a comic book made into TV, and in that context I find I enjoy it. I think the writing and acting could improve, and on shows like this it often does. (Ever watch first season Babylon 5 or Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes? Decidedly spotty.)
One thing I really don't like is the recaps at the beginning of each show, because...

They're dishonest. They keep referring to the guy with the glasses as 'evil' when he is at this point still an enigma. For all we really know, he may even be a good guy.
But overall, the show is interesting enough to make it onto my small list of shows my TiVo grabs and keeps every episode of.
(Along with Prison Break, Lost, Battlestar Galactica and Veronica Mars.)
