As you know, there are users that like to cuss. They use things like WTF, OMG and proper swears. Of course, these profanities shouldn't really be heard by the younger forum members, so what I'm proposing is an age tag to go into posts. Basically, it would look like this :

[age=12]text[/age]

This means that the user viewing the post must be twelve or over in order to see the censored out text. Just imagine how helpful this would be, as it would make the forum more secure to the younger users.

I think it's already implemented - it's called "not typing something". Basically, if you think that what you write requires a tag to protect some forum users from it, don't write it.

And yes, I know sometimes you need to rant and use language that might not be kiddie-safe, but if you're angry and ranting you're probably not going to stop to put in nice tags anyway.

And besides, how would you know which users are over a certain age? There's nothing to indicate age except for a user's own claim about their birthdate.

(Except, I suppose, date of registration. You could certainly make text in "age=12" tags visible only to people registered for at least 12 years, on the grounds that they're at least 12 years old. This has pretty limited use, however, and in particular won't be useful for another, what, eight or nine years.)

It comes down to a lesson I learned ages ago in an online forum: don't look for technolgical answers to sociological problems.

Not to mention that those accounts will then be auctioned off on eBay for insane amounts of cash... :lol

"Protect the children", eh? There's free software for censoring one's children already, and if it's not in place one may assume that the child needs no protection.
Furthermore, the idea that certain words corrupt anyone's mind, body, soul, thoughts, or anything else is ridiculous and worse than specious.
Finally, suppose I don't like disclosing personal information such as age online, which keeps me more secure - would you have me denied content for that?
Don't make me go political on your donkey.

The main problem of this idea, other than the fact that it would most likely rarely be used, is that people who do use it would think that they can get away with saying anything then.

Then there is the fact that under 12's would feel excluded from the rest, and of course there is the age old adage "growing up is optional, growing old is compulsory".

:-O I can hardly believe this. Anyone so sensitive he needs protection from seeing WTF is surely NOT fit to play a computer game where you slaughter creatures with a gigantic sword. One might say he isn't fit for society at all.

on some forums, saying WTF gets you a message from the moderators telling you to not do it again. I'm dead serious.
The reason, they argue, is that little Jimmy is going to see that abbreviation, then look it up/ask someone, and then they will see that word, and say it when they shouldn't, and then they will be asked where they learned that from and they will say X forum.

I know, its kinda like banning a game because you can go online and download a mod that allows you to see porn in that game.

OMG on the other hand, has a religous implications, thus you would need religion tags to hide it...

Anyone for Religion tags? ;) .

Anyone for political tags ? Anyone for nationality tags ? Anyone for Userlevel tags ? Anyone for CaravelNet tags ? Anyone for TagTags ?

Sorry, but I dislike the idea of those age and religion tags. I think it's better if just everyone is using a proper language.

So Michael Jackson walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm. He says to the bartender "I'll have one for me, and one for the road."

Sorry, I couldn't resist...
