I seem to keep getting over-whelmed by too many roaches in the lower section in order to progress with the orb sequence. Generally, I

but the lower section and upper sections fill too fast to enable me to take them on every spawn. What am I doing wrong?

Your approach is sound. In this room there will be occassions where you have to retreat in the face of a swarm . . . you won't be able to advance 100% of the time.
