How do I get in here? I've cleared all of the tar and mud in 1 East, but the gate doesn't drop, and I can't find an orb to strike.

I've not played this room yet, so I can't really help. All I can say is that if it's a yellow door, click all the orbs in a room until you find the orb that opens it. After that, just plan your way to the orb. If need be, I'll paly through to this room tonight and help you then.

But there aren't any orbs at all in the room! The door is striped yellow and black, so presumably I have to remove the tar and mud. But what then?

I am standing there in a totally empty room, and the door is still closed.

A yellow and black door, is called a Master Wall. Master Walls only drop after you finish the hold, and complete all the secret rooms. Then you restore back to the room with the Master Wall, and you can pass it.
