Hey! I am enjoying the game so far but those tar mothers are getting me frustrated.

I found out the way you destroy tar don't change anything to the final result (if it remain a 2*2 square or not), only the size when you begin to smash it change the final result. So what's to do in this room? I need to try to kill each tar group at every growth stage to see when it will be ok? Or do I simply need to kill the eyes in only one grow (which seem imposible)? Or do I need to destroy a few tar and leave it growing after?

This level is really bad if you ask me because it's not logic who will help you find the solution, only try everything possible until you get it...

There can be a lot of logic involved if you think it through very carefully (for example, search for a topic around these forums called 'invariants of tar cutting'). On the other hand, you could approach it with a bit of trial and error, which is probably slightly easier.

Quite often, if tar is uncuttable, then letting it grow fully for one turn keeps it uncuttable. One way to try to avoid this:

I can't get this one. No matter how long I wait or where I position myself to block the tar, I end up with an unkillable tar circle somewhere. Would someone give me a hint? Which mother to kill first, how long to wait, something?

I killed the left tar mother first. But it's possible to do it either way. Only kill both tar mothers when you're sure all tar is cuttable. You'll also want to get rid of the lower left 3X2 block straight away. It's possible, and easier, to do the room before the blocks of tar reach their boundaries.

Here's my "foolproof" method of solving this. It's not the fastest, but it gets the job done, and is kind of easy to explain.

I really am SO over these tar mothers :angry

I've read the posts. There must be something wrong with my tar cutting technique.

Any suggestions.

And, how come these blessed tar mothers don't die!!!???

How do you mean "they don't die"? Which point are you stuck at?

Oneiromancer's hint above is pretty complete. Does it not help?

:huh? The tar mothers will die.

Anyway, some techniques to bear in mind while dealing with tar.

Yeah... Also, though I don't remember this room, you will have to cut all the tar so only kill all the eyes once the remaining tar is cuttable (usually a surface covering a number of squares divisible by 3).

(Is that right?)

Anyways, I'd recommend getting rid of all the standalone bits, leaving 1 set of eyes alive and cutting the rest. Then trim down the tar where the last eyes are and finally kill the eyes. That ought to work, and the black door should then open.

Another useful method of getting small parts of tar into a cuttable shape is using Beethro and his sword to block the tar growth.

This room is too frustrating - that damn black door insists that all tar be removed, but I can't take out those tar-mothers before they spawn.
Every I clear the tar it leaves uncuttable blobs... so I let the tar-mothers expand them - and then the tar becomes too unmanageable to clear completely before I'm swamped!
Am I supposed to work miracles?
