After dancing a bit, I managed to arrive in this position:



But now I die no matter what. Is there a magical sequence of moves that I'm missing, or do the blobs need to be cut down from opposite sides?
If so, how can I manipulate the guards? I assume the east alcove might help, but I have no idea how.

It's tricky, but you can "freeze" the guard you're pushing around by constantly pushing him into a wall or a gel blob. Keep him busy until the other guard finally catches up.

Well, it took me quite a while, but I finally managed to do it.
To future people looking at this thread, here's a screen of my solution three turns before cutting the blob.
