Once you have entered the house after being confronted by the thief:
Notice that several items, upon looking at them (w/the eye icon) have letters. Spell out 'Lodge' with these letters and the large barrel will open, revealing a ladder. Every time you go back you will now automatically be able to open the barrel without spelling out 'lodge'. I suggest saving before going down the ladder, b/c you will be immediately attacked. Jump by pressing 'J' and clicking. You will dodge and be greeted by Regin, who claims this was a mere test and should prove no difficultly for the likes of you.
Look into the chest and you will retrieve your stolen items, and a lodestone. Use the lodestone on the glittery purple thing to the left. You'll get lock picks so you can break into houses.

Oh! And the lodestone is a necessary item for getting into svartelfheim- for rogues at least.
