Well, the canonical answer would be "as much as possible". I'm not exactly sure which stats I had when I fought him, but his total damage was down to 750 whereas I had several thousand HP.

Those HP were mainly hoarded through avoiding fights as much as possible from the start - don't forget that you can always go all the way back to the beginning to mop up what enemies are left at much lower risk than it was earlier on.

The first one is the one next to the pressure plate. You can avoid killing that one.

Just make sure you stuff most of the platforms into the west end of the pit so you can use the one you enter on to go around the black door.

Yeah, it looking exactly like a TCB orb doesn't really convey the "portable" bit... :)

My attack is 239 and defense 80 and I'm pretty sure I've cleared the level, expected damage is 2100. How do I lower it further? What have I missed?

I was able to get it down to 1750, and I've heard that you can lower it even further to 1100, but don't ask me how.

My advice would be to search for hidden rooms, and backtrack to see if you can can find some more attack on lower levels.

Attack gems are high priority so if I missed any they're in super secret special hidden rooms.

I'm just bombing him for now and seeing if I can beat the game like that, but I am curious as to whether I can 'legitimately' best the pirate.

Ummm... unless I'm very mistaken - shouldn't you have more than 2100 hitpoints at this point?

For starters, I'm fairly new to DROD (in general) and am currently stumped as to how I would navigate the mimic properly so that I might be able to stand upon the red door.

Basically: Start the game over.

I thought having 2,100 HP by this point was ludicrous, but it's more than possible.

A lot of this game is starting over from the beginning (which doesn't take as long as it sounds) and being more optimal, wasting less, etc.

Mimic positioning is tricky. I personally really learned it from that one KDD level where you're moving eight at once.

So... I arrived at the pirate w/ requisite hp, killed him OK.. but how do I now proceed? Wall Walking doesn't appear to function to get me to the visible stairs, and I have no other ideas. (I did try the different approach of grabbing the pickaxe and then using that to get the portable orb - I guess I could go back *again* and see whether the pickaxe will get me to the stairs.. but advice would be appreciated!)

EDIT: Argh! OK, stupid crumbly walls...
