Found this in RC4, but it's present in RC3 as well.

When editing a serpent, if you don't click in a certain length of time, the helpful hint box appears telling you how to edit a serpent. After it goes away the last click you made when editing your serpent is marked as an error, and you are not allowed to edit any further. You must hit Escape to quit editing, then re-click to finish your serpent.
