It looks to me like the only way of preventing an unkillable tar baby from forming in the upper left, is to get to that upper-left patch of tar and hit it before the tar grows even once. But that seems utterly impossible, since I have to come in from the south. What am I missing?

I've not played this room, but on looking...



Whatever the solution is, though, you should have one full spawn cycle before an inaccessible tar baby is formed.
