how do I use the rope, just can't seem to do it???

You press Z when standing on a tower, and facing another. If you already tried that, make sure you have enough rope, there's a number at the bottom of the screen, next to the rope icon. Each rope you pick up increases the number by five, and the number represents the aumount of squares between two towers you can connect. You can take the rope back by doing the same thing as before, between two already connected towers. I think that's the way, unless you remapped your special key.
