there's gotta be a principle behind solving the room other than the solution I've come up with, because the solution method I have is SUPER TEDIOUS (trace every ball backwards through 122 moves or so from a goal position)

The same old cliche:

"It's easy if you do it the right way!"

The idea here it to imagine a slot car race... the blue PP'S are the finish line and the balls are the cars.

All you have to do is to keep them in the same starting formation.
