I'm having trouble editing the tilesets for Linux. It would be much easier if I knew how to save them as. I'm sure that Linux doesn't like my bmps.

What application are you using to create and edit image files? I'd recommend The GIMP 2.

The Windows and Linux versions of DROD support the same formats. For AE, the only supported format is BMP, but JtRH supports PNG and JPEG as well. I think BMP is still supported, but I recommend using PNG for lossless pixelly images and JPG for photo-like images. For tiles, you need losslessness, so use PNG for that.

As for how to get the tile images for editing, for AE you've got the GeneralTiles.bmp file in the Data/Bitmaps directory, but for JtRH this file isn't publically available. In stead, you can use this as a base in stead (scroll down for updates), or some of the other custom tilesets posted here at the Development board.

Edit: To use the tiles in JtRH, put the file in Data/Bitmaps and add a line to the [Graphics] section in drod.ini (the one in ~/.caravel/drod-2_0* if it exists, otherwise the one where you installed DROD), like this:
General=Filename

This should come after the "General=GeneralTiles" line, so that your file overrides GeneralTiles.
