I have got to the trapdoor & know I have to drop it, but seem to have tried every sword direction and every way to step off - still I always get gobbled up. Any hints?

When you cannot make a stand, run! It may be possible to kill the goblins without pulling back to safer waters, but it is not necessary. Easy or Hard: 1W displays a particularlity in goblin movement that might be useful in fleeing from this ambush. A more explicit hint below:

I'm afraid my name is pretty much random, and unique: I used some Greek roots to create it, but they are barely recognisable now.
