Where and why did the thread for Dungeon Crawl disappear?

For those who didn't read it, it's an interesting roguelike game, which has some interesing and unique features:
large and varied dungeon levels;
varied monsters, many of them having special abilities that make them unique;
interesting spell system with both different disciples and different elements, which ofren overlap, and many different spells;
many different and varied gods, each with its own requirements from you and its own rewards to good followers.
