Mimics will always act in the same way. If Beethro moves, the mimic copies him. If the mimic can't move the same way as Beethro, then it's a bit more complicated:
If the move was horizontal or vertical, and the mimic can't move that way, then it stays put.
If the move was diagonal but the mimic can't move diagonally that way, ikt tries to move vertically that way. If it can't do that, it moves horizontally - if it can't do any of those 3, it stays where it is. For example, if Beethro moves NE, the mimic tries to move NE; if that square is blocked, it tries moving N; if that is also blocked it tries to move E.
If you're still confused, (it's probably easier to work out from watching than from reading) try building a room in the editor with lots of obstacles and a couple of mimics, press F5 to test it then play around in it. Notice what happens if you move in a direction that the mimic can't.
