I put my mimic in the same place gamer did. This is a variation on a theme of several in the "bump the mimc around" category of puzzles, and it's one of the harder ones. It's not just you, this was the last room I conquered on this level, including the secret.

Gamer pretty much summed up the concept, but that doesn't make the execution of it easy. Be mindful of your contraints especially when you are one step away from the wall. Make sure you can manuever the mimic to the appropriate side of each obstacle. Other then posting a demo, I'm not sure how else to help on this one.

Looking at the best demos for this room makes me feel sheepish... I was something like 68th place...

Could you explain better what you mean by heading for the yellow doors to resupply your range of motion please? (In the previous room, if i backed up and headed over the same territory, the mimics went farther each time... they don't appear to act in the same manner in this room???

Mimics will always act in the same way. If Beethro moves, the mimic copies him. If the mimic can't move the same way as Beethro, then it's a bit more complicated:
If the move was horizontal or vertical, and the mimic can't move that way, then it stays put.
If the move was diagonal but the mimic can't move diagonally that way, ikt tries to move vertically that way. If it can't do that, it moves horizontally - if it can't do any of those 3, it stays where it is. For example, if Beethro moves NE, the mimic tries to move NE; if that square is blocked, it tries moving N; if that is also blocked it tries to move E.

If you're still confused, (it's probably easier to work out from watching than from reading) try building a room in the editor with lots of obstacles and a couple of mimics, press F5 to test it then play around in it. Notice what happens if you move in a direction that the mimic can't.

Here you are.

Since it'd be pretty tedious to copy this demo move for move, and, more important, you need to get comfortable handling mimics, let me give some advice. First, I would suggest that you re-read the comments in this thread. There's some good info here. Second, watch the demo a couple of times. Then experiment with moving just one mimic around the room, without trying to solve it. Pressure's off that way. Once you feel a little more confident, try tackling it again.

Good luck. And please let me know -- via PM or this thread -- when you've downloaded the demo so that I can remove it.

Maybe it would help to think about the room in a different way. Pretend that the object of the room is simply to move that outer mimic from upper left to lower right (or the reverse as I solved it.) In doing so, you will have to drop all the trapdoors.

Because Beethro is in such a small space, he will often need to relocate himself while the mimic stays where it is. So he moves in a direction that the mimic can't, because of a yellow door or a dropped trapdoor or a wall.

This was a hard room for me, too, the first time around. My most frequent mistake was moving Beethro one step too far when pushing the mimic against a yellow door or dropped trapdoor. (I did that a lot when the mimic needed to be pushed some in two directions.) So, before making each irreversible move like this, I started making little side trips to check that the mimic could still get to the next place where it could be pushed. I think this would help you too.

Because of those little side trips I made when solving the room, my demo is long and confusing, and I won't post it here. Sorry!

PS: There's a different, probably easier way to do it in less than 100 moves... ;)

What about the challenge? Given I only need to hit one orb since, well, that's the challenge, of hitting one orb and then clearing the room, it's more a question of what orb I need to hit to be able to clear the room.

Fun fact I just realized: You can do this room without hitting any orbs.

You still get the challenge if you don't hit any orbs, and it saves you from worrying about accidentally hitting a second orb as you move around.

More concrete hint:

Damn, thought I was the only one that did this lol.
Yes, you're correct. There are few ways to do this, with or without touching an orb.
I tested both and it worked, but you have to avoid hitting the orb again
which could be a lil difficult
