As much as I'd like to attribute things to my awful puzzle skills it's often hitting 5, or swinging my sword the wrong way that takes me out, and right now it seems I can't go back a move if it's fatal. I just want to make sure I dont' need to hold control or something to make it work.

Yes it does, you're just not doing it fast enough.

No...it should work just fine. Do it during the death animation though, while the screen is fading...you get about 2 seconds. If you've restarted to the last checkpoint or beginning of the room, then you can't recover via backspace.
