I've been stuck on this one for a very long time now. The best I've gotten is as follows:

Yes, you've been trying things similar to what worked for me. You might go back to trying the part when

Thanks guys, got it! Just had to be more efficient getting back to the NE part. Finally got to level 25 now!

Well, I'm stumped :~(
Most times when it comes to efficiency it is just a matter of trying over and over again, shaving turns of your best 'time', but this time I can't even clean out a single quadrant before being overwhelmed by babies and roaches. Can somebody please give me some hints on tar and mud ploughing through this room?

First of all, remember the differences between tar and mud. Tar can't be cut on the corners, but mud can't be cut on the edges.

With this in mind, set up priorities.

I was stuck on this room FOREVER. Well, in terms of actual trying time maybe not all that much, but for some reason just loading up the game and looking at it was so discouraging I turned it right back off, for months.

Having finally beat it, me leave some hints for posterity. My way differed from what other hints here are suggesting.

It is easy to kill the 2 NW queens but then do you (a) stop to kill the 2 babies that come after you from the NW chamber, (b) rush over to the NE queens & roaches and try to get them or (c) kill the tar mother in NW?

I know that I cannot do (a), (b) seems impossible and (c) well, I can kill the mother but then get stuck in the chamber surrounded by both kinds of babies and roaches. yet the mentioned way to go is to the NE queens. So, how is it done?

Least. Favourite. Room. Ever. :)

I spent weeks on this one. My order was this:
Click here to view the secret text

There are a few places where you're going to get chased and have to turn around and fight at the last moment. It's not a fun room.

Look on the bright side though -- it only gets easier from here :) Only three more rooms left on this level (two of which are more thinking/planning than efficiency), then level 25 is a nice change.

Tuttle:

Thanks for the advise. I have been trying the NW queens, NW tar mother but I get stuck in the NW chamber with monsters coming at me from two angles, top and left side. I can't seem to get out and on the the NE queens. I have found out the you can skip the NW tar mother and go E and then S and kill the other 3 queens but then you are stuck in the SE tar (after killing it) with no way to get to the NW tar to stop it.

Maybe I will give the NW queens & NW tar another shot.

Thank you.

If you stay inside the chamber, those initial waves of babies kind of form one killable stream. Once the other chambers stop producing tar/mud babies, it's possible to make a run for it.

ok, i have reached the X spot shown in the demo, i.e. no queens, no tar mothers, and two mother muds to go. But, although I can kill the mud mother in the NE I can't seem to get back out away from the other babies that are coming. Any suggestions?

All very good advise ... and it worked going counter-clockwise ... it is possible to work your way down to the SW corner and there, if you have your sword SE you can kill all the newly hatched mud babies, turn around, kill the ones above you and have time to enter the SW chamber, establish an area and then kill the mother.

Thanks very much ... one tough hold ... they ought to have a vote on what is the toughest hold in the 25 ... I know the one I would vote for ... not sure of the level but it is the one with almost the entire hold covered with trapdoors :w00t

I seem to be missing something here. -_-
The farthest I can get safely is shown in the screenshot.
I can (from here) kill the hoard coming from the north, but then I need to turn and fight the group from the west. There isn't enough time left to get to the NE.
What am I doing wrong? :blush

Doesn't look like you're doing anything wrong :)
You can get into the northeast mud chamber after the next spawn.

Thank you for your advice, I did make it into the mud. :D

Now I have a new problem, I cannot get OUT of the mud! I have tried several variations in my attempts, but they all leave me eventually with my killing mud at the same rate that it is spawning. Not good for making progress! :no

If I understand you correctly you just have to follow a wall out. You don't have to destroy much of the mud in order to get out.

Ummm... I know this isn't really going to help you, but - what are you using to take screenshots? The colors are totally messed up in this JPEG for me... :look

(If it's DROD's built in screenshot function - are you using the latest patch? If yes then I guess a bug report would be in order... ;))

Following the wall works fine (I've tried both walls) but in either case once I reach the diagonal wall I'm met by far too many babies.

I noticed that the colours were messed up when I made the screenshot. Yes, it is DROD's built in function.
How do I find out about this patch, and where would I find it?

Well, the last released patch can be found on the site's download page (which is 2.0.15.1 at the time of writing), while a beta patch (2.0.16rev2) can be found in the stickied patch topic on the "Bugs" board of this very forum.

What version does JtRH report in the main menu? (i.e. what's the number it displays in the top right corner of the main menu?)

np: Robert Babicz - Losing Memories (A Cheerful Temper)

Says 2.0.15.1 - looking for 2.0.16rev2 to see it that may solve the problem.
Just checked: It doesn't mention a fix for colours...

Strange - I'm running 2.0.16rev2 and my screenshots come out right, but I'm quite sure the same was true with 2.0.15.1... :look
