Canasta is a great game and my favorite on the list. For most decisions you make there is both a reason to do it and a reason not. It's complex enough that intuition must be used in place of raw analysis, and it takes a while to weight all the little cues right so you can be a decent player.

I voted for Hearts, but Cribbage is high on my list as well. Good memories of the few times I was ever able to beat my Dad at that...and also Backgammon. And only once at Trivial Pursuit!

Down my neck of the woods we play Skat (german 32 card game
similar to bridge, but for 3 players) and Doppelkopf (Similar
to Skat, but with two decks of 32 for 4 players and no bidding)

Finally in my family Rommee has great tradition.

My favorite card game is a home rules variant of Marriage (with a bit different scoring system). By the way, the fact that I know more than 20 different card games doesn't make me a "Card Smiter". I hardly play cards at all

Bridge is my favorite, although I don't get to play much since I moved out of my parents' house to go to school (~10 years ago). Hearts and Spades are high on my list of cool card games. I once went (and made) Nil in Spades after my partner bid 6 and I had the K of spades!

I also like cribbage. My dad, sister and I used to play a 2 player game called Casino (I've never seen it anywhere else, so it may be called somethingelse officially) which is quite fun once you get the skills down. Also, we used to play a home grown version of Gin Rummy in which you were allowed to pick up multiple cards from the discard pile (provided the bottom one you pick up can make a set) and you could also play cards off of other people's sets. For war-like games, we played Egyptian Rat Screw.

I've played a similar game (that we) called BS. In our version, the first person has to play 1 or more 1s (or Aces) face down, and says "3 1s" (if he played 3 cards). If he has 1 or more 1s, then he can make a valid play. If not, he has to lie. After he plays, people can accuse him of lying (they yell "BS!") with similar results to your game. The next person then has to play 2s, then the next has to play 3s (then 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J Q K and then wrap back to Aces). Until somebody is out of cards.

That's not so home-grown...it's a variant that I've played many many times over the years. Usually when I play gin rummy we all have to decide on the "house rules", which includes whether you are forced to play the lowest card in the discard pile if you draw more than one. I've never had a problem with playing off of other people's sets though.

That's not so home-grown...it's a variant that I've played many many times over the years.

Well, by home grown, I mean that we started with a different set of rules and decided to change them on our own. Its possible that we have some mutual friends (since I've played this way with people outside my family, though it was always me teaching the rules rather than someone saying, "I've played that way before") or you and your group of friends happened to discover the same set of rules independently. But I've never seen that exact set of rules written down or implemented as a computer game (whereas I HAVE seen other Gin rule sets implemented as computer games), so I consider it to be fairly on the fringe.

I've played BS many times too...my favorite thing to do is, let's say it is my turn to put down Nines, I'll put down two cards and say "two Tens" and someone points out that it's the Nines turn and I say, "Okay, two Nines then" and of course someone calls BS and of course they take the deck since it was two Nines all along. Yeah, I've seen that done a couple of times. I personally like laying down more cards than I claim, but making sure that the top few cards are legal. For example, claim "2 sixes" and lay down 2 sixes plus another card underneath. That way, if someone calls BS, they turn over the top two cards and it looks like I didn't lie. Cheating games like BS and Cheater are excellent for finding ways to work outside the box.

I said Bridge, as I do enjoy it - I came 6th in the English Bridge Union's School's Simultaneous Pairs competition last year, perhaps mainly due to the fact that a lot of players in my school are abysmal and that my partner and I knew the scoring system - they give harsh penalties if you don't bid and make game when you should, and big bonuses if you do . I play lots of Hearts and Spades too. Unfortunately all my card-playing friends at school have moved on to Magic the Gathering, which I loathe, but I still get a good game in occasionally.

We play a slightly different version of Cheat - and it's not just me, everyone I know plays it this way - you can put down the same, one above or one below the previous card, and you can start with anything. So if you start with 6s, next player can put down 5s, 6s or 7s (at least, they must say they have), and after a call of Cheat, whoever was in the right starts the next round.

When playing Cheater, I find it's very disconcerting when someone puts down 6 aces in a row . I always seem to pick the time they weren't lying.

pinochle is awesome

Reading through these posts I realized how many games I forgot about...such as rummy, cribbage, BS, etc. oh well.


my favorite by FAR though is definetly bridge. If you play this game for a long time, you really learn how cue cards work (which helps in any game). Also the bidding system in bridge is very intricate...which means I'm almost always learning something new when I play it.

Oops, I didn't see the last option and I voted for Solitaire games. My favorite game is Kings, but FreeCell is my second favorite card game. For those of you who don't know what Kings is, it's a drinking game popular among college students.

My favorite normal card game is a swedish game called Rödskägg. At the beginning of each round, players bet on how many times they're going to win on that round. Then, the player that betted the largest number gets to play his cards first, and the player that plays the best cards win. If you win as many times as you betted, you lose that many points. If you win less times than you betted, you lose that many points and gain 5 points. After that, players get new cards and start over. The point of the game is to get to 0 points. (This was very simplified, but you get the picture)

If you count trading card games, my favorite card game is without a doubt Magic: The Gathering. I usually play green-red decks, with lots of flashback cards and land destruction.

I wanna learn playing Mao... Anyone who let's me peak in their game?

One game I usually play with my classmates is "Culo" ("Ass" in Spanish).

The cards are sorted by number (except for 1 and 2). i.e: 3<4<5<...<11<12<1<2 (we play with Spanish decks, but it's also playable with Poker decks).

At the beginning of the game, all cards are given to all the players (same number for each one).
First player throws X cards of the number Y (for example two Fours). Next player has to throw the same number (X) of cards but of a number higher (in the same example, two Fives, two Sixes, ...). Next player has to overcome the previous one, but always with the same number of cards. When someone cannot (or doesn't want to) throw cards, he can pass. When everybody in a round passes, the last one who threw cards starts a new round.
The aim of the game is to throw all your cards.
When somebody finishes his/her cards and has to start a new round, obviosly he/she can't. So the next one in the circle starts it.

The first one to finish his/her cards is the President, the second one the Vice-President, the last one is the Ass, and the last but one is Vice-Ass. The ones in the middle are just nothing.

At the begining of the next game, the Ass has to give his two best cards to the President and the President gives two cards [at the President's choice] to the Ass.The same happens with the vice-Ass and the vice-President but with only one card.

I found a pack of cards by Richard Garfield named "The Great Dalmuti" (it's not invented by him, obviously, but he made the deck) that it's just the same game but with 12 Peasants (the worst card), 11 Stonecutters, 10 Sheepherdress, 9 Cooks, 8 Masons, 7 Seamstress, 6 Knights, 5 Abbess, 4 Baroness, 3 Earl Marshals, 2 Archbishops and 1 Great Dalmuti (and also two Jokers)

The gameplay is the same, but puting less cards of better games is more fun, because they're more rare to appear.

My favorite card game goes by many names. I first learned it as "Schpline", which is probably something that none of you have ever heard of. Another name is "Beggar Your Neighbour" and the one I think is most popular is "Egyptian Rat Screw".

Rules:

Deal out the deck. Do not look at your cards.
The person on the dealer's left begins play by placing one card face up on the table.
Play continues (always to the previous player's left) until either
a: A face card or an ace is played.
b: A double appears
b1: Variations on b.

a: The following values are given to faces and aces.

Jack-1
Queen-2
King-3
Ace-4

The player who plays next puts down that many cards (2 after a Queen and so forth) and no more. If they play a face or an ace, or a double or variant, they stop, and play continues to the next player.

If they do not succeed in playing appropriate cards, the person who played the face/ace gets all of the cards in the pile.

b: If a double appears (two cards of the same value, whether number, face, or ace), the first person to slap the pile gets it.

b1: "Sandwiches" are also a variant-if there is exactly one card in between two cards of the same value, the pile is slappable.

A faulty slap implies "burning" a card-if your slap makes a sound (hits the table) then you must place the next card in your hand on the bottom of the pile, and it has no effect on gameplay.

Whenever you get the pile in the middle, place it immediately beneath the cards you are currently holding.

When playing a card onto the pile, you must flip the card out (so others see it before you). Otherwise, you will have an unfair advantage if it is a double. There are still ways to conceal the cards while flipping out, so it becomes more fair, and speed is the easiest way to do so.

First player to get all of the cards wins.

I really like this game, possibly because I'm quite good at it. Over the past 3 (possibly longer) years, I have been beaten by a grand total of 1 person, and him only twice. Once was pure luck (no slaps) and once he beat me with luck and skill and speed.

I warn you-you may become slightly injured in this game. Jammed fingers are sometimes common.

Still, 'tis my favorite card game.

I played Beggar my neighbour without the slapping thing - it's purely a game of luck, and as such not particularly exciting over the age of about 8. My little brother likes it but I don't usually play with anyone else.

That reminds me - anyone play Racing Demon? That is one great game, particularly with about 12 players. Rules as foillows:

Each player needs 1 standard pack of 52 cards and deals out for Demon solitaire, which is:
1 pile of 13 cards face down, then the whole pile turned face up so you only see the top card. Your aim is to clear this pile. Deal 4 face up cards in a row alongside. Wait till everyone is ready.
On the word "Go!" each player starts playing. Cards can be built onto your row of four alternately red/black descending, as in Solitaire, from either elsewhere in the row of four or the top of the 13 pile. When you cannot go, turn cards up fom the rest of your deck 3 at a time to a discard pile. You can also use the top of the discard for building. When the deck runs out you turn the discard pile over and reuse it. If a gap is created in the row of four it must be filled by the top card of the 13 pile. Any Aces are played into the centre and built on as in solitaire, in ascending suits - but here comes the twist - you can play on anybody's cards in the centre! So if you put out an Ace of Diamonds anyone can put their two of diamonds on top, then anyone the three and so on. This often leads to people racing to put the same card down first. If you move to put a card on a pile and someone else beats you to it, tough - put it back and wait for another chance to play it.

As soon as someone clears their pile of 13 - to the centre and to their row of four - they shout "Out!" Everyone stops playing and counts the number of cards remaining in their 13 pile. Now, all the cards in the centre are sorted (it helps if the backs of the decks are different) and returned to their owners, who count them. Your score is the number of cards you got into the centre minus the number that were left in your 13 pile. Then shuffle your deck and pass it on to the next player for the next round. Winner is the one with the highest score at the end of the session.

That last one is clearly not at all like the others, but whatever.
