Actually, you can go back through this room. The game will let you walk onto the black door from another room... and you're safe from explosions while standing on a door. The architect even built in a way to let you go forward through the room a second time without needing to clear all the tar and mud by sword.

(and stigant, how do you go from 1N3E to 3E?)

I confess to having a similar problem - except the one I put off until the end was Twice East. I don't see any way to get to Thrice East from Once North, Thrice East - and haven't been to Thrice East yet, since that requires going through Twice East. Didn't see any secret passages, either ... am I stuck restoring? Or am I missing something obvious?

(lousy golems ... even when I keep two rooms between them and me, they still manage to outwit me! And they're the proverbial dumb-as rock, too! argh!)

Ooops... I misread the map. I've been completely unhelpful on this room. :-)

Okay, I swear this post wasn't here when I posted mine. The five minute's difference is clearly a trick of those pesky golems. They've learned to manipulate space-time through their sheer idiocy, I bet ... (sounds like something out of 8-bit Theatre, I'm sure). Didn't even think to try swording a bomb ... thanks! :)

OK, I'm totally stuck on this room. Would love to get to the point where I'm worried about "getting back here" but I can't seem to conquer it in order to leave! I know how to kill the roach in the corner, but am I suppose to do that? Even if I don't, I never have enough time to clear everything away in order to open the black door before the bombs go off. Am I missing something obvious here?

Not really. You just have to learn to be efficient in your mud/tar cutting. Try to form as few babies as possible, so you don't have to waste time smiting them.

This room has me completely frustrated -- I guess I'm just not as efficient at cutting tar and mud as I thought. I kill the queen just fine, and then work my way from right to left, then back again, cutting the tar and mud as I go, but I always end up ten or more moves away from finishing when the bomb goes off. Clearly I'm missing something, and I think it may be due to my cutting technique.

If anyone has any suggestions (the more explicit the better), I would greatly appreciate it. In particular, I'm wondering in what order to eliminate the blocks of tar/mud, and what is the most effective way to deal with each type of substance.

You don't necessarily need to kill the queen yourself, not if something else will do so for you.

kill the mud/tar while dealing with roaches with the goal of getting to the NE corner before the bombs go off. if you can stand on the NE corner where the black door is, you're safe.

Hummm ... I have been trying the "kill the queens first" but I end up at least 10 moves short ... So I gave it one more try and concentrated on economizing my moves ... it works
Thanks :thumbsup

Bad old Room :thumbsdown

Once you clear this room and then come back later on from the west you have to clear the mud again ... waste of time :weep

i just can't get this room. i've tried killing the queen first, and not killing her first, either way i'm short a matter of moves, i've shaved off moves where i can, but always lose some getting sword into position for next batch of tar/mud, at first i gave up and skipped ahead to level 23, but i don't want to do that, i want to beat whole game, but this room is really annoying me.

The most important part of this room is cutting the tar in such a way that the roaches get to you from a favorable direction. Also, killing tarbabies and roaches should be done in a way that is efficient but also leads you into a position that lets you start cutting tar/mud again as quickly as possible.

I can't say for sure if killing the queen is faster or not. All I can say is the only demo I could download where the queen waS killed first had fewer moves to spare than most of the others that did not. That could just be due to inefficiency on the part of that particular player, though.

Of those that did not kill the queen, one had 18 moves to spare.

Ug.

Try as I might, I just can't get it. Even a basic "here's an efficient tar-cutting method" post would be helpful.

And a demo would be perfection. :blush

Here you go. And here's a link for tar clearing tips.

EDIT: Macdaer, please let me know -- either here or by PM -- when you've downloaded the demo as I will delete it.

I didn't realize I could survive the bomb if I was standing on a door. I really should've figured that out, but instead I restored my way back behind the black door. Then I cleared 1W and 1-4E. I wasn't sure how restoring worked. I thought maybe the game would know I've cleared all the rooms and get rid of the level clear door even though I restored to a point before I cleared everything. That's how mastery doors work, right?

So am I just screwed? Do I have to redo rooms to get through the blue door?

Unfortunately, yes. Dropping a blue door requires completing all rooms in the same save - only secrets are permanent.
