So hit me with a cluestick... how did you reach an alcove (west, I'm guessing) by turn 30?

I went for the east alcove.

I can not check it now, but I worked my way up (1 or 2 space above the alcove)
And then found a hole to get to it.
I also stayed in the alcove until all guards were done.
