I recently found that you will get a serpent deletion prompt even if you are using one of the other menus - for example if you try to place an empty floor square on top of a square with a serpent. On the first and third menus, if you say no, you will automatically be editing the serpent (with the shadowy tail on it, to place it, etc) but not on the second.
