So, after finding this area, I hod to go back to level 1 and recomplete numerous puzzles simply to avoid missing level 5. Out of curiosity, I'm wondering if there was a more efficient way to return to the main map of level 4.

First, you should know that there's a Restore function, which would have let you start at a much closer room.

Second, if you went back through the passage, you could have still exited the previous room. It's just a matter of crossing the trapdoors and hitting the orb.
