Call me stupid, but I can't seem to figure out the right way to take care of these tar-filled passages. Any way I turn in the maze, I always find myself with (at least) one pack of roaches blocked off. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Well, its almost better to look for the opposite -

as then you have no choice and can work from there.

Start off (in your plan, not in the game) with the roaches After one or two steps you'll notice which you may have missed.

Well, I thank you for your prompt responses, and thanks to both of you, I have finally managed to beat that room (and the level). I'd noticed that certain thing, TripleM, but never thought very much about the opportunities it brought.
