The Sixteenth Annual People's Choice Awards

Welcome to the Sixteenth Annual People's Choice Awards (also known as The Deadlies)!

One would think that after so many years of DROD things would soon start to die down, but the DROD community keeps on going, continuing to produce high-quality content on a consistent basis. So that means there's still plenty of reason to continue celebrating, so let's start those celebrations with the results of the 2019 Deadlies!

Best Custom Game Element
Hydra in The Island of Doctor More-So by Dying Flutchman

Custom elements are a great opportunity to try out something new and unconventional, and as such it's not every day that you see an element that looks and feels like it could have easily come from one of the official games. The Hydra works well, is coded well, and is fun too. A very well deserved award for Dying Flutchman.

Design Excellence in a Modification or Addition
DROD RPG texture upscales by kieranmillar

DROD RPG's graphics are twice the size of regular DROD and small images are hard to upscale while keeping them looking good. But recent improvements in self-learning computers have resulted in big leaps in image upscaling, which resulted in this pack of wall/floor/pit texture upscales. As these graphics cover most of the screen most of the time, these looking cleaner and less blurry makes a big difference in how DROD RPG looks.

Technical Design Excellence in Scripting
The Island of Doctor More-So by Dying Flutchman

If you ever wondered how much went into scripting a custom serpent and wanted to know how to replicate it yourself, The Island of Doctor More-So contains rooms explaining the process of getting it to work and how it was achieved. It's really cool and makes it very clear that this hold was definitely deserving of a second award for its scripting.

Technical Design Excellence in Layout and Aesthetics
Architecture Salon by jokokoe

Architecture Salon is really impressive with its dedication to ensure very creative and unique aesthetics. It has an enormous number of levels and each one tries to do something different and unique with its aesthetic design. It's really impressive and inspirational. Check it out if you want some examples of how to blend interesting layouts and cool mini-map pixel art with enjoyable puzzles.

Technical Design Excellence in Concept
Floating Friendship Facility by Bent

Poor Halph rarely gets a look in in DROD holds, an early game element, abandoned in most holds... untril now! Floating Friendship Facility is all about the unique mechanics of Halph, and it turns out there is quite a significant number of cool puzzles you can make with Halph that had rarely been seen before after all these years. The puzzles in this hold are very creative and really ask you to pay careful attention to how Halph works, but you'll learn a lot and have a great time in the process.

Creative Design Excellence in Storyline
The Island of Doctor More-So by Dying Flutchman

The awards for this hold just keep on coming. This hold didn't just pend a lot of time and effort on the scripting, the surrounding hold got a lot of polish too with a cute framing story underpinning the whole thing. It's not just a hold demonstrating a new custom element, it's an entire entertainment experience.

Creative Design Excellence in Difficulty
King Nareik's Dungeon by kieranmillar

Make no mistake, King Nareik's Dungeon is pretty tough, with some rooms even in the first level causing people to seek help from the Hints and Solutions board. But unlike some infamous examples from the early days of Architect's Edition, this modern AE hold achieves its difficulty through devious puzzle design rather than long and over-precise manipulation or magic sequence hordes. King Nareik's Dungeon proves there's still a lot of tough puzzle design space present within the limited confines of the old classic DROD elements.

Creative Design Excellence in Entertainment
Quick Lunch Break Hold #5 by disoriented

Holds don't have to be particularly tough or long to be enjoyable, as this award proves every year. While this award goes to the fifth entry of disoriented's series, the truth is it applies to all of them, nice small bite-size holds with fun puzzles that will keep you entertained for ... about the length of lunch break, apparently. And now there's enough of them for one lunch break each working day! A whole week of DROD lunches!

DROD Hold of the Year
King Nareik's Dungeon by kieranmillar

It's been a long time since the release of the original DROD, even Architect's Edition is nearly 20 years old at this point! But after all these years, and the addition of an entire plethora of new elements across multiple entries in the DROD series, Architect's Edition still works. This large hold, made in the original Architect's Edition engine while still weighing in at just under 200 puzzles, goes to show that there's still a lot of life left in the original game when you apply modern DROD design principles to it. Because at the end of the day, DROD is still DROD, just an enjoyable now as it was way back when.

DROD RPG Level Set of the Year
Castle
by 1stCortez

While RPG receives nowhere near the same amount of content and user levels as the main series, content is still going, and this year, unlike many years, saw a tough battle for the top spot of the RPG award. But eventually the community settled on one winner, the debut hold of new architect 1stCortez. This hold is a fun romp through traditional RPG gameplay with story, secrets, and a lot of solid decision-making.

Best Voice Artist in a Distinct Role
Erik Hermansen playing the role of Arky in Arky's Revenge Compilation

As the most popular new character in The Second Sky, Arky was a fan favorite so when a contest was run to make more Arky rooms, it was amazing to see Erik offer his voice talents to reprise the role for the contest entries. And given the popularity of the character, there was quite a lot of entries. Which probably took Erik for a surprise, but he still pulled through and spent quite a bit of time recording the lines on a live stream. Thanks Erik, and don't forget to check out his upcoming game The Godkiller while you're here.

Novice Architect Award
1stCortez

1stCortez entered the community with their first published hold Castle, winner of this year's best DROD RPG hold. Winning an award with your first hold is tough, so a big congratualtions to 1stCortez and hopefully there's still more to come.

Erik Hermansen Award for Lifetime Architectural Achievement
Someone Else

Someone Else has been around in the community for a long time now, with his first hold made back in 2008! Someone Else's holds typically focus on the unusual, with early DROD holds including custom scripting to add new rules, or his RPG hold Paycheck that focuses on greckle gates. And now the community would like to say thanks, thanks for still being here and thanks for still contributing!

Best Community Contributor
Schik

Schik isn't just a valuable member of the DROD community, he is essentially the most important member of the DROD community. The unsung hero, Schik puts in a lot of quiet effort into keeping everything running including this very forum you are looking at right now. Schik is a thoroughly top bloke. Thanks for all that you do for us!

Best DROD Video Presentation
Chaco (a.k.a. Leylite)

Chaco's DROD videos and livestreams snag this award for the second year in a row. Chaco makes very entertaining playthroughs of DROD and DROD RPG holds, with careful and engaging explanations of his thought processes, highlighting interesting parts of the architecture he's looking backed up by ahis huge knowledge of the game and its design. It's great watching someone with the level of understanding of DROD that Chaco has.

Unfortunately that is all for this year. A big congratulations to all this year's winners. Not going to lie, 2020 has been a pretty bad year IRL so far, hopefully DROD will buck the trend of real life and continue its trend of good, fun content made by a friendly community. I already can't wait for next year's Deadlies.

I haven't been on the forum for two weeks, but that's some good news to return for!

Thank you very much for your votes. I am really proud of your recognition, because I pout in a lot of effort.

At some point I almost stopped trying to make the scripting work. But I am happy that I continued :)

Keep save y'all!
