I'm confused, if I don't hit the orb near the entrance the briar traps me in after I've completed the room, but if I do then I can't get back out.

Well, is there any way you can get the room clear after hitting the orb if it isn't clear before you do so? Or to put it another way: What can happen if you wait around after hitting the orb?
