icon English language (0)
I sometimes suffer from sudden bouts of dyslexia. Yesterday, I read 'sword' and pronounced the 'w' in my head.

This lead to a discussion of what letters in the English language are silent in any word or location.

The rules are this:
The letter must not be part of a compound letter grouping 'ch'or 'ck' in check
Dipthong's are also not allowed.

Currently we have 14 of the 26 different letters.

Perhaps a list of the letters you already have would help this along?

The 'h' in herb isn't silent.

Otherwise it's actually interesting to see a number of words where removing the silent letter would affect the pronounciation of the word.

What about quite -> quit ? Messed up the whole pronunciation.
Not to mention quiet and quid.

English orthography is a mess, really. If you read a word you don't know, it's basically guesswork how to pronounce it (example: finite/infinite). Conversely, if you hear a word you don't know, you can never tell for sure how to write it...

It typically is in the US (where they kept the French pronunciation). Pronouncing the 'h' was a later addition by the British.
