It's not necessary to kill the slayer afterwards. In general, the slayer is not a "required monster", which means the room will be marked as cleared even if he's still alive at the end. As long as you kill all the tar/mud mothers and all the tar/mud babies you are done. Just make sure the slayer doesn't make more by cutting tar before you leave the room.

EDIT:
Okay, so I can't resist adding that it's actually perfectly possible to kill the slayer and kind of fun to learn the techniques required to do so. The easiest method to do it in this room is the "corner kill" which you can learn about in the very first room of "Slayer Killing Hold"
http://forum.caravelgames.com/viewtopic.php?TopicID=11529

You basically need to make a double corner for the slayer and push him up against it in a particular way. Here's how I would set it up in this particular room:

You can also use this same trick with the arrows around the tunnel at (14,25) You can push the slayer along the wall to the north of that tunnel so that he backs up to the diagonal arrow at (15,24) for example. The key to this is that both you and the slayer must have swords pointing diagonally towards each-other but away from the wall.

Again, this is completely unnecessary, but a fun technique to learn.
