I tried two different approaches. The first sucked a lot. This was avoiding hitting the orbs on hot tiles that open a passage until absolutely necessary.
The second approach is to hit all the orbs on hot tiles relatively early. This blocks off all those passages, but it also blocks off all the fluff vents, which removes the time pressure and lets you manage the puffs that you do have a lot more easily.
I personally recommend the second of these two strategies.
