I bought DROD The Second Sky through Steam on the Mac. The game is unplayable from “Somewhere under the sea” onwards — the game simply crashes and cannot be restarted (it just crashes again when I restart).

I see that I am not the first person to have this problem on the Mac, and that there was a similar problem on Windows.

Has this problem been fixed on the Mac? What can I do to get either a working version of the game, or a refund (Steam refused; no response so far from support@caravelgames).

Thanks for any advice!

Currently, the only feasible way around this would be to install DROD on a Windows machine, play past the affected room, and then go back to your original machine. It's not ideal, I'm aware.

On the refund side of things, if Steam hasn't done the decent thing, you're probably out of luck. Really, the game shouldn't be offered for Mac given the fact that it doesn't actually work, but Valve is incredibly lax on these kind of things. Unfortunately, the lead DROD developer decided to spend some time away from the game, but neglected to upload a fixed Mac version to Steam. Also I can really do is suggest the above solution and shrug.

I have also bought The Second Sky on mac recently - I was so into JTRH years ago this is great to play.

However I found this page while trying to figure out why there is no sound in the game on mac. It looks like I will need a Caravel version so I can get past this level on my mac.

Any chance please slimm tom?

Can anyone confirm that the version from Caravel is fully playable on mac? I'm not too worried about sound, just want to be able to play the levels without it crashing. I bought TSS on steam, but getting to the point that crashes took me longer than steam's limit of 2 hours play time for refunds… Buying it again isn't great, but would be be money well spent for the time I'll sink into it. I just don't want to get stuck with a second broken copy of it.

I have the Caravel version of TSS on Mojave 10.14.2 and it works fine, including sound. There is a crashing bug related to playing back demos in rooms with both time clones and custom NPCs, but that's not a major thing most of the time.

Gentlemen, I apologize for the crashing issue on Mac. I absolutely care about the issue, but I lost my Mac development server a year or two back and don't have the means to troubleshoot and correct the issue.

I've granted lbthing a Caravel Forum license to TSS. Happy to correct this for anyone else with a crashing Mac build on Steam who PMs or e-mails me confirmation of ownership. Again, apologies for the huge inconvenience.

Matt, if you or anyone else with dev access could provide a fixed Steam build, I'd be happy to publish it on Steam. By your personal comment, it seems you feel quite emotional about this issue and have something you'd like to resolve. If you'd like to discuss this or any other issues with me, please e-mail me and I'd be happy to chat about it. I know and understand this issue looks bad and is bad, and I wish I could fix it, but I can't. In this instance, I'd like to appeal to you and the rest of the dev team for assistance in fixing this issue.

Hi all, I was about to acquire TSS on OSX Steam. Then I saw the bad Steam reviews.

Is the problem still present as of now?

I can try to compile the latest patched version if needed, I have OSX after all

I just checked, and the problem is definitely still present - the game crashes when I just select "Somewhere under the ocean" from the "Restore" menu, even before I try to actually start playing.

Is there still a way to request a non-steam copy via this forum? I would like to play the rest of the game someday (I bought it on steam more than three years ago and have still never played anything beyond the sixth level)

slimm tom, may I ask you to look into this?

From the stack trace, it looks like this issue was due to a rendering glitch that manifested while using SDL2 in the Steam build.

Now that we're creating all builds with SDL2, you should be able to see whether this issue persists in your local dev build while playing this part of TSS.
