I'm just flailing around here, would appreciate some advice for how to actually clear out these queens.

I've tried making a shelter of dropped trapdoors; that lets me survive, but I can't clear out roaches fast enough to actually take out any queens. I've also tried rushing to drop the red door and hit the orb, but then I don't have a good spot for fighting roaches.

The shelter approach is correct. You need to clear out as many isolated queens as you can before placing the shelter, and try to keep the remaining queens in one location.

Part of the difficulty is getting the initial setup as perfect as you can. There are several strategies once you've done that.

But neither of these is necessary. I usually solve it organically once I think I have the setup done properly. It just takes effort to get the setup right.

Yikes. This is definitely more difficult than the tower version. I can't seem to find a workable strategy here and don't even know if I'm close to anything. I'm going to go ahead and recognize my weakness with this kind of room an explicit walkthrough of the first few spawn cycles or a demo.

On turn 0 you're at the 25,15 checkpoint facing N.
You may be able to survive the first spawn by staying near the SW corner.
