I conquered the level but when i exit by way of the stairs at the entrance the image on the map doesnt show it as conquered and no new destination appears

I don't believe the images ever change, so unlike the buttons that you click for most levels, this one will never show as cleared.

That being said, there is a second set of stairs that you need to take to leave this level and continue with the story. Look for blue doors throughout the level, or look for areas on the minimap that look like they should contain a room.
