I must be missing something obvious since there are no hints. How do I keep the tar mother from growing and blocking the corridor?

All you need to do is:
-Hit the orb at (21,11)
-Go to the northwest tar blob
-Clear it, hit the orb at (4,3)

Then you can trim the mother's blob (but not kill her, because tar growth is what triggers the orb in the wall) and get plenty of time to do whatever other tasks you're trying to do.
