How do the snakes move?

I've been trying to do the room that has the demo on L7, and getting really frustrated on the last snake. Instead of gracefully sailing past him as he goes down, he eats me and I have to kill all the other snakes again.

I've noticed they change direction every 10 turns, they don't do diagonally (as told), as they don't step on force tiles (again as told). Can anyone tell me anything else?

http://www.drod.net/serpent.php has some info on the serpent, but not in too much detail. I seem to remember a post with more detailed information in the General section, but I couldn't find it through a casual browsing. Perhaps the search function would work better, but you can do that yourself.

It definitely changes every 5 moves, though.
