Doesn't seem to be a topic for this one... but I'm completely stuck.

I can't see ANY way into this one at all. I can get to the end of the trapdoor path, but trying to push any of the barrels inwards - whether with the pickaxe or with Beethro himself - seems to get me instantly killed by a tar baby.

I'm assuming it's the same whether you enter from the north or west, since the board is symmetrical, so let us assume I am standing on the western X:

(1) Which direction should I be facing?

(2) What should be my PRECISE EXACT next sequence of moves?

What's important here is that you have a pickaxe, so some moves are pushing moves, and some are killing moves.

Thinking about that might help you get started. If you need more, full details below.

I entered from the west, killed all the tar babies but I cant get out of the room. What did I do wrong?

Hard to say without seeing your position. But are you sure you can't get out with a bit more work? See if you can push some of the kegs around to free up your position. The way you should be trying to leave is

you're right what I had actually done is go in from the north path which left no way out
