The published user hold "Break Out of Jail!" tries to change the ending text you see when you beat the hold by assigning the text to variables and then displaying these variables as the ending text. (e.g. the hold end text is something like:
$Ending1$
$Ending2$
and before the end of the hold a script assigns text to the variables Ending1 and Ending2)

Unfortunately this text does not show. I know it has been missing as far back as 1.2.1.57, but cannot confirm any earlier than that. It is still missing in 1.2.1.70.

Please note that this is something that works in regular DROD (the hold Pickle Cellar is an example of a hold that uses it), and I am assuming that this has worked in RPG at some point. Here is a post where the architect of Break Out Of Jail says he has added in this ending text using variables, and I can only assume at this point that it was working back then. nobody later on in that architecture thread has ever said that it didn't work. It's entirely possible that it's never worked, of course, but it looks like nobody has ever bug reported it.

EDIT: Dammit, I don't know how I missed this, but there is already a topic for this bug after all! http://forum.caravelgames.com/viewtopic.php?TopicID=29871

And it appears that the other thread has figured out the problem, which is that the text isn't displayed if it is updated in the room with the ending staircase, so in my test and in Break Out of Jail! it was showing the previous text (which was nothing).

Actually in BOoJ it's even funnier, for one of the ending staircases the script to set the text does appear in another room but is only triggered by beating a boss, who is actually accidentally optional, therefore I never even triggered the script to set the ending text!

Thanks for reporting this, and linking to the other thread, and also investigating and clarifying what the actual issue is. I'll plan on fixing this soon.
