The editor will let you place equipment (weapons, shields and accessories, as well as the empty slots) and keys directly onto water and pits. It won't let you build pit and water directly on squares containing these though, so it seems this check is failing in one direction.

Further to this, keys can not be dropped off of platforms or bridges into the water or pits, they will just float in mid-air. Equipment will fall correctly though.

Potions and gems will fall correctly and can't be built on pits, so it's not all of the RPG-exclusive stuff this happens to.

In 1.2.3.98 Steam and non-Steam, I can confirm that keys will now fall from bridges, and equipment cannot be placed onto pits and water.
