Apparently there's a challenge here called "No Friendly Fire", but there's no scroll or other directions about what to do.
I killed the guard without using the stick on any stalwart, but that didn't award the challenge. So what's the deal? :unsure

The deal is that the challenge is bugged and unobtainable.

I've PMed Jeff Ray about it but I don't know what's going on beyond that.

Yes, it has. The hold update was pushed through back when DROD got updated to 5.1.
