I wonder why the brain apparently does not find a path for the roach in this situation from Doctor Beetro

Monsters are brain-invisible obstacles. Brain offers the roach moves NE, N, E, stay (in this order), of which the first 3 are actually blocked. Being ordered to stand still, the roach reverts to unbrained behavior, but that doesn't help. Wubbas don't move because they consider only the first of brain-offered moves.
