Am I supposed to step on the plate and kill the goblins? They group up so I can't kill any of them.

Yes. This room is to get you used to fighting with the dagger. Remember that it can kill an enemy on the square adjacent to you, or the square beyond (or both at once!) Goblins avoid squares next to your weapon, so when you have the dagger, a neat trick is to face away from them to let them come close, then stab behind you. Another idea in this room is to try to leave the square "box" so you can deal with one goblin at a time.
