Schik wrote me a little utility a while back to count the number of rooms in user-submitted holds. At time of writing, there are 3356 (!) rooms. Add the 350 or so that Lucas and I came up with, and there are 3706. Given that every room has 38 columns and 32 rows and each square is 5' by 5'...

Our vast underground empire covers an expanse of 2,586 acres!

Pretty cool, eh?

However, if the entire collection of hold rooms were excavated and tiled onto the surface of the Eighth (assume no spatial squashing due to topological problems), the entire extent of the rooms would only cover 0.000041% of the surface (although there will be 8 iterations of the rooms over the slices).

This is comparatively miniscule compared to the total area of the "pie" and so therefore it means that there must be thousands of hidden dungeons out there, somewhere undiscovered.

Brave delvers (and architects), to you is handed the task of finding (and excavating) these holds, so they can be recorded, and therefore the true extent of infestation all over the Eighth be found.

Does this include only those on the Holds board?

Yes, just those from the "Holds" board.

I don't suppose your count included the fact Claythro's Tower is supposed to be above ground? ;)

Technically, you could say that the tower is a(n) (artificial) projection of the ground into the sky, forming a sort of very steep hill, containing the dungeon. Since it therefore is beneath a surface that is an extension of the ground, it is therefore (by very stretched logic) underground.

And don't forget my hold, the Five-Sweet Speeking Grauns. Many of the rooms are overlapping, and it probably beefed up your count a fair bit.

And Dugan's Dungeon Revisited reuses at least the three first levels of King Dugan's Dungeon...or does it?

It's an approximation, and a cute one.

In any case, it's quite clear that we haven't even made a dent in the Eighth.
