OK, I'll try to explain. If you are still stuck, I have attached a victory demo showing the solution.
When you're dealing with only one goblin, the area to the SE that you're trying is fine, but if you're dealing with multiple goblins, you'll be killed. Instead, when you have multiple goblins swarming around you can

×make use of the fact that they get in each other's way and try to break movement ties by preferring to move towards the north-west.
There's a checkpoint near the strip of red floor tiles near the middle of the room. If you can get multiple golbins to head towards you from the corridor directly to the East of that checkpoint then you can move along that red strip and push them into the big central pit. It only works when there are multiple goblins as you have to rely on them blocking each other so they will choose to stand next to your staff. When you have only one left you will have to use the SE pit.
