is there a trick to this? I can kill both serpents, but can't escape quickly enough. if it's timing, can I get a demo?

No significant trick to this - the only real one is to make sure the rattlesnake doesn't head away from you.

Multiple ways to solve it. Hints for one way below, which assume you start at the center of the room, not the south entrance.
