Let's say you left the west crumbly wall up. So you're trying to move westwards, while facing west. The ideal set-up for this is for the roaches to all be in a line; then you can charge straight through them.

Each turn, all monsters move in a fixed order, which you can see by right-clicking on them. In this room, the order is all jumbled up, so the roaches can easily get in each other's way and fail to get into line.

The best way to get around this is to give the roaches as much space as possible -- in other words, a counterintuitive move away from the wall.
